A popular holiday spot for beach life, surfing, fishing etc. Also famous for hosting the annual Beach Hop, NZ’s largest nostalgia event that celebrates the best of the 50’s & 60’s – Rock and Roll, Hot Rods, Classic Cars and Motorbikes, an annual 3 day event every March. I attended this event a couple of years ago, and while I’m not such an enthusiast to go every year, it’s well worth a trip to absorb yourself in the festivities and atmosphere. The streets of the Whangamata town centre are closed off for food, partying, and live bands, every year the event seems to be bigger and bigger with a new category of retro caravans which is really cool.
